AVOIDANT EX
Why Your Avoidant Ex Is Only Responding to Practical Topics
It’s also a red flag when an avoidant who had moved to emotional and relationship topics goes back to only responding…
You may have noticed that your avoidant ex, specifically dismissive avoidant or fearful avoidant leaning avoidant, only responds to practical or logistical messages but seems completely uninterested in anything emotional.
You ask how they are, and get a short answer. You bring up something personal you used to share, and the conversation goes nowhere. But when you mention something about returning an item, picking something up, dealing with a shared responsibility, or sorting out some practical detail, and suddenly they respond.
- Sometimes they respond quickly.
- Sometimes they give you a thoughtful answer.
- Sometimes they even continue the conversation.
This can leave you wondering: Do they need more space? Should I stop reaching out?
But this is completely normal with avoidants. This kind of interaction feels safe and comfortable for them after the breakup because practical conversations are easier than emoional or relationship conversations.
Practical conversations also have something emotional conversations don’t:
- They have a clear purpose.
- There is usually a question that needs answering, a decision that needs making, or something that needs to be dealt with.
- There is very little ambiguity.
For example:
- If you ask, “Can you pick this up on Saturday?” they know what the conversation is about.
- If you ask, “Do you still have my jacket?” they know what information you want.
- If you ask, “What time should we meet?” there is a straightforward answer.
- There is no hidden question underneath it.
They don’t have to figure out what you are feeling, what they are feeling, what the conversation might lead to, or what responding might mean for the relationship.
To an avoidant communication on practical and logistics is still communiction
When an avoidant ex only responds to logistics, it’s easy to quickly interpret is as they’re being distant or being cold.
But that conclusion isn’t necessarily supported by the behaviour.
Their willingness to discuss practical matters tells you that they are not completely unwilling to interact with you, they’re open to communication.
At the same time, the fact that they are keeping the interaction practical tells you they may not currently be comfortable expanding it into emotional or relationship territory.
In plain language, there’s contact but things haven’t moved to emotional or relationship territory.
From an avoidant perspective, that’s still connection. They’re communicating.
For example, you ask:
“Are you going to be home Saturday? I need to pick up the rest of my things.”
They respond: “Yes, probably around 2.”
You reply: “Okay, I’ll come around then.”
They say: “Sounds good.”
To you it feels cold, distant and rejecting, but to an avoidant they communicated, and it went well.
Now compare that with a conversation that starts with logistics but gradually becomes more personal:
“Are you going to be home Saturday?”
“Yeah, I’ll be around.”
“Okay. How have you been?”
“Pretty good actually. Work has been crazy lately.”
“Oh really? What’s been going on?”
Now the interaction has changed. The subject matter has moved beyond the practical reason for contact, and an avoidant suddenly feels pulled into emotional or relationship territory.
What it means when they’re only comfortable with practical topics
Avoidant ex responding to only practical and logistical topics is more noticeable in the early stage of reconnection. This often tells you something about their current comfort level.
After a breakup, and if there was a break in contact, there’s usually a period where even ordinary interaction feels uncomfortable or emotionally loaded.
When you reach out after no contact, most avoidant may not know what is expected of them, may not know why you are now reaching out or may worry that a simple conversation will quickly turn into a discussion about the relationship or become heated and emotional.
They may also still be trying to understand what they themselves want.
At this stage in the reconnection process, practical and logistical communication provides a very controlled environment.
- There is a beginning.
- There is an end.
- There is a reason for the interaction.
- And there is less risk of accidentally creating expectations.
This tells you something important about where in the reconnection process you are in.
It doesn’t necessarily mean they only want a practical connection
With most avoidants, reconnection doesn’t always begin with a dramatic conversation about missing each other.
On most part, an avoidant ex may initially respond to something practical, then they start answering a little more fully, then they ask a question back, then they mention something happening in their life without being asked, then the conversation continues after the original reason for contact has disappeared.
Eventually, you find yourselves talking about things that have nothing to do with the breakup but are also more than practical and about logistics.
This is a sign that things have moved from: “We need to communicate because something needs to be dealt with” to: “We’re communicating because we actually want to interact.”
The practical subjects may have been the entry point, but it is no longer the reason for the conversation.
When responding to only practical or logistical messages is a red flag
But if after weeks of open lines of communication an avoidant answers the practical question and immediately disappears from the interaction, or continues to consistently ignore emotional or personal contact but responds to practical matters, you know that the door to communication isn’t completely closed, but it isn’t completely open either.
This does not necessarily mean they don’t want contact or want space. It means that the period of no contact created enough emotional distance and an avoidant hasn’t yet reached the point where they feel comfortable abut non-practical or logistical matters.
The practical conversation gives them a contained reason to interact with you, but distance still feels more comfortable.
Responding to only practical or logistical messages can also be a red flag when an avoidant who had moved to emotional and relationship topics, goes back to responding to only practical or logistical messages.
This is usually a sign that something about the interaction increased their emotional discomfort, causing them to retreat to a level of communication that feels safer and more manageable.
Rather than ending communication altogether, they narrow the type of contact they are willing to have, returning to practical topics because those allow them to remain connected without having to engage at the same emotional level.
