FEARFUL AVOIDANT EX
Fearful Avoidant In Rebound – Breadcrumbing Or Still Loves You?
It can lead to breadcrumbing one or both people because a fearful avoidant can’t make up their mind who they want…
In my article fearful avoidants love you and someone else, I explained the Fearful Avoidant Rebound Stacking Pattern where:
- They rebound while still attached or having strong feelings for an ex, then
- They go back to an ex but continue talking to the rebound (sometimes keeping it hidden from the ex), or
- Start a new relationship while still connected to the rebound who is now an ex.
Instead of replacing one bond or attachment with another, they remain emotionally, mentally, and sometimes physically attached to two or multiple people at the same time.
The roles blur between past and present with both of you meeting different attachment needs at different points. Unfortunately this can sometimes lead to a fearful avoidant being stuck between two people.
Other times, it can lead to breadcrumbing one or both people because a fearful avoidant can’t make up their mind who they want to be with.
Why it’s hard to tell if you’re being breadcrumbed
It’s hard to tell if a fearful avoidant in a rebound is breadcrumbing you because they may genuinely still have feelings for you while also still exploring a relationship with the rebound. Their reach outs and responses can come from love, confusion, fear of getting too close to the rebound, unmet needs, or a need for reassurance — making breadcrumbing and genuine interest look very similar.
If you’re worried that you’re being breadcrumbed or used as a backup plan, here are some signs that their feelings for you are real and still strong.
1. The rebound knows about their feelings for you
This is one of the clearest signs.
They’ve directly told the rebound that they still have feelings for you and that getting back together is a possibility. This can look like:
- Admitting they’re not over you
- Saying they still love or care about you
- Telling the rebound they might go back to you
- Framing the relationship as temporary or unclear
By doing this, they’re keeping your place in their life acknowledged and active, even while they’re with someone else.
2. They reach out in moments of intense stress
You are the person they feel safest with, so when something overwhelms them emotionally, they instinctively lean back to you.
This can look like:
- Messaging or calling you when they’re anxious, upset, or struggling
- Opening up to you about personal problems instead of their current partner
- Seeking comfort, reassurance, or grounding from you
- Reappearing suddenly during difficult moments in their life
Even while in a rebound, their first instinct when feelin unsafe or overwhlmed is still you.
3. They express dissatisfaction or instability in the rebound
When the topic of the rebound comes up, they have very few positive things to say about it. Instead of describing a stable or fulfilling connection, their tone is uncertain, critical, or detached.
This can look like:
- Speaking negatively or vaguely about the relationship
- Highlighting problems, incompatibility, or lack of depth
- Describing the situation as confusing, on-and-off, or unstable
- Avoiding giving clear or enthusiastic answers about their current relationship
Even while staying in the rebound, they don’t present it as something solid or satisfying.
4. They sneak behind the rebound to spend time with you
This is one of the most complicated signs.
They make time to see you privately, text you in secret, or emotionally confide in you while keeping it hidden from their current partner.
This can look like:
- Meeting you one-on-one without others knowing
- Messaging you in ways that feel concealed or intentionally private
- Sharing personal thoughts, feelings, or problems with you
- Maintaining contact that would likely upset their partner if it were known
This behaviour is complicated because it shows emotional inconsistency and confusion — and also shows they’re trying to have both connections without facing the reality of their situation
5. They are affectionate or intimate with you while in a rebound
They show physical or emotional closeness with you even while being with someone else.
This can look like:
- Flirting or creating romantic moments
- Being physically affectionate or intimate
- Seeking closeness that goes beyond friendship
- This means their feelings for you go deeper than you being an ex and deeper than a friendship.
6. They are curious or reactive about your life
Even if they don’t say it directly, their behaviour shows ongoing interest in what you’re doing.
This can look like:
- Asking others about you or trying to get updates
- Paying close attention to your social media activity
- Reacting when you seem to be moving on
- Showing subtle signs of jealousy or heightened interest
- Sometimes try to get in the way of you moving on.
This means they’re still emotionally invested in you and paying attention, even if they don’t openly admit it.
The reality behind these signs
Even if a fearful avoidant ex still loves you, this doesn’t automatically mean they’re ready for a healthy relationship.
Sneaking around, being inconsistent, or staying in a rebound while connecting with you are not signs of emotional readiness — they’re signs of internal conflict.
They could come back to you then turn around and do what thy did with the rebound with you – or even seek connection elsewhere.
This is why you need boundaries to protect your emotional stability and self-respect. Clear boundaries pritenct you emotional ad mental health:
- Is it safe staying emotionally tied to each other?
- How do you keep the connection without losing self-respect?
- Where do you see this going, realistically?
Clear boundaries also create some sort of structure. Examples of boundaries you can set:
- No late-night emotional intimacy while they’re with someone else
- Not always being available when they feel conflicted
- Limiting conversations that blur relationship lines
Both people know how to stay connected without putting themselves in an unnecessary vulnerable position.
At the end of the day, what matters more is:
- Are they willing to be honest and accountable to both the rebound and you?
- Are they choosing you openly – not just in private moments or when it’s convenient to them?
If not, then their feelings – no matter how real – aren’t something you can rely on.
And if you’re trying to figure out what a fearful avoidant’s true intentios are, it might help to focus less on who is the “rebound” in the love triangle – and more on what’s actually changed in behaviour and communication between you two.
