AVOIDANT EX
4 Signs Avoidant Wants to Come Back BUT Can’t See It Work
It’s easy to interpret their resistance as they’re never going to change their mind. In my experience, that’s not always…
Many avoidants resist getting back together even when they’re clearly not completely over you.
They stay emotionally connected, remain open to talking, or even say they wish things could be different, yet when the conversation turns to getting back together, they hesitate, pull back, or insist that the relationship wouldn’t work. They even insist that you move on because there is nothing to try to fix or even talk about.
When this happens, it’s easy to interpret their resistance as they’re never going to change their mind.
In my experience, that’s not always the case.
Many avoidant exes want a relationship, but because they can’t see how things could work differently, they start believing that the relationship can never work.
From their perspective, the question isn’t simply: “Do I want a relationship?”; it “What would make this relationship different enough that I could believe it would work this time?”
Interestingly, that’s something that both people can agree on: What indeed would be different this time around?
So how do you know if you avoidant ex wants a relationship but doesn’t want to get back together because they can’t see how the relationship can work?
1. Their resistance is focused on the dynamic
Pay attention to what your ex is actually focusing on. Is their resistance focused on the relationship dynamic or on relationships in general? Are they acknowledging that the relationship was overall good, but that certain dynamics overshadowed what was good about it?
An ex who thinks the relationship in general wasn’t good focuses on why they don’t want the relationship itself—the incompatibilities, the lack of connection, the things they didn’t like about being together, or why they don’t believe the two of you are a good match. Their concern is with the relationship itself.
An ex who is concerned about the dynamics not changing worries about repeating the past, says you have different needs, or questions whether things could really change.
They are not rejecting the idea of getting back together. They are questioning whether being with you, under the same relational dynamics, would produce a different outcome.
This matters, because if the obstacle is the relationship dynamic, trying harder to persuade them to get back together or even that you belong together actually misses their point. They don’t need reasons to want the relationship; they need to see how the relationship could work differently.
2. They remain actively open to connection
An ex who is completely closed often cuts off contact or reduces contact to minimal, and often only practical or polite conversations.
But an avoidant ex who remains open to contact, shows warmth, responds when you reach out, reaches out every now and then, shares personal things, is comfortable around you and even spends time with you, wants some type of relationship with you.
The question is: Do they want a romantic relationship with you?
This only becomes clearer with time. This is why trying to accelerate getting back together backfires.
If they can gradually experience you differently and can see that they dynamic is different this time around, then the question: “Can the dynamic be different” answers itself.
3. They notice changes in you
This is one of the most important signs.
When your avoidant ex comments on the changes they see in you, even small or mundane ones, it means they’re observing you and paying attention to how you are different.
An ex who isn’t interested in getting back together doesn’t care if you change, grow or go to therapy. They may be happy to see you work on your issues, but those changes aren’t particularly relevant to them. Your growth is your business.
An ex who may still be open to getting back together looks at those same changes through a different lens: How the changes impact them or could make a future relationship feel different.
They’re not necessarily thinking, “They’ve changed, so I should take them back.” They may simply be gathering new information: “Maybe things really could be different this time.”
And this matters because an avoidant ex who is concerned about the relationship repeating old patterns needs to experience enough of the change to begin believing that getting back together wouldn’t mean returning to the same relationship.
4. They become more open when the relationship feels different
Perhaps the clearest sign isn’t something your ex says at all. It’s what happens when the dynamic between you changes.
If they become increasingly open as the relationship feels calmer, safer, more mutual, and less predictable in the old way, you may be seeing the beginning of a different relational dynamic.
This is the clearest sign that their resistance wasn’t about not wanting a relationship, it was about not seeing how a relationship with you could work differently. Now that they’re experiencing a different dynamic with you, their resistance may be beginning to soften because they’re starting to see that getting back together actually not be a bad decision.
What makes them eventually move on
There is only small window of time in which an ex remains open to getting back together.
The biggest mistake most people make that closes the door completely is that, instead of focusing on creating the conditions that help an ex see how the relationship can work differently, they focus on giving the ex space.
Space can only do so much. It can reduce pressure, allow emotions to settle, and give both people room to breathe but it cannot, by itself, create a new relationship dynamic.
For an avoidant ex to see that the dynamic between you can actually be different, you have to actually connect, gradually interact, build consistency, and spend time together. You can’t disappear for months, then suddenly show up and say, “I want us to have a new and different dynamic,” and expect them to simply take your word for it.
Just because you say you want things to be different doesn’t mean you necessarily know what that looks like or, more importantly, how to create a different dynamic.
Even if they were originally open to coming back, the fact that you have no idea how to actually create a new dynamic and are asking them to believe that a new dynamic can just happen, makes them realize that a relationship is never going to work.
At that point, their resistance is no longer simply about being concerned that the relationship can’t work differently; it’s being conformed by your own actions that the relationship cannot work.
